Diet For Diabetics

Diabetes is a disease that is marked by higher than normal levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood stream. This is caused by many different things : your body's resistance to insulin, or a pancreas that doesn't generate the proper amount of insulin for you to function properly. Insulin is a hormone that the body uses to convert glucose into energy. In either case, it is important to maintain positive control over the level of blood sugar to prevent some major health problems, including the possibility of entering a diabetic coma. Figuring out the best diet for diabetics has been a topic of strong debate for quite some time.

For many years, it was thought that people suffering from diabetes should avoid sugar and other carbohydrates at all costs. The reason for this is because sugar is easily broken down into glucose, and as a result it enters the bloodstream faster than other carbohydrates. Many artificial sweeteners have been created that are supposed to replace sugar in a diabetic diet.

Medical professionals today have realized that in this day and age, there is little they can do to prevent diabetics from being exposed to sugar and other carbohydrates. There are artificial sweeteners that are calorie and carbohydrate free, but that food that contains the sweetener can still be unsafe for a diabetic in other ways.

Ultimately, the diet for diabetics that should be followed is identical to a healthy diet for anyone. This way, those with diabetes don't need to limit themselves so severely. However, this is only possible given very meticulous monitoring the amount of carbohydrates a diabetic takes in every day. Both starches and sugars are included with carbohydrates, so in addition to foods that are sweet, potatoes and pasta also should be consumed in limited quantities.

The best decision is to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to one's diet. Fruit and veggies contain natural sugars that can be used by the body but are just enough unlike glucose to stop them from raising the blood glucose level. The fiber that you'll get from the fruits and vegetables are sufficient to let their body more efficiently eliminate waste, leaving the person feeling more full.

You don't have to make one meal for the diabetic and another meal for the remaining family members. Basically, a diet for diabetics doesn't have to be different than anyone else's in their family, as long as they are careful. This includes many vegetables and fruits, and a balanced intake of starches and proteins, as well as the occasional fat.
